I've done it myself so I'm not pretending it doesn't apply to me. But, after a lot of soul searching and reflection I finally got to the bottom of what was holding me back and worked out what I wanted my life to look like. I got rid of a lot of goals I thought I'd wanted but didn't really care about (like fast cars and lots of travel) and my list eventually ended up with about 5 things on it.
Since then I've coached many people in both the IT and business arena and I've worked out a very powerful set of questions which will really get you clear on WHY you are doing something. Please be warned, if you are 100% honest here you may find the process unpleasant. In fact, most people who read this won't even complete the process. Those who do, I guarantee it will help.
Grab a pen and paper. I want you to think in relation to your IT studies now and answer the following. Usually the first answers you come up with are the best but write anything that comes into mind.
1. What will happen if you achieve your IT goals?
2. What won't happen if you achieve your IT goals?
3. What will happen if you don't achieve your IT goals?
4. What won't happen if you don't achieve your IT goals.
It's as simple as that. The above is referred to as a cartesian coordinate and it works really well.
Have fun and post a comment please.
