Advanced IT certs, such as CCNP and MCSE, are great to have for any IT engineer. The issue, of course, is that you have to study for around 12 months to achieve these certs and take several exams before you get the certification.
You might be missing the trick though. All the below companies have a policy to hire CompTIA certified staff for ANY IT role. Read that as no CompTIA cert equals no job. Not a great outcome you have to admit.
- US Department of Defense
All the above hire based on CompTIA qualifications, and it makes sense when you think about it. The following aspects apply to all CompTIA engineers:
- Are qualified vendor neutral
- Understand the theory
- Understand practical applications
- Have passed the exam
Compared to vendor exams, CompTIA exams are pretty easy and each one could be passed in a few short weeks of study. After that, you could apply to any of the above companies (and others) and would meet their selection criteria for certifications.
Many years ago, when I was starting out in IT, employers hadn’t really heard of CompTIA so it was just a useful stepping stone on the way to a vendor’s certification. Fast forward 14 years, and the game has changed. CompTIA is an international brand recognized by all companies. They have branched into healthcare certifications, project management, IT training, the Cloud, mobile technology, media security, and beyond.
If you aren’t CompTIA certified, you should consider it. Below is our CompTIA training page. Please use the coupon code “comptia” to get access to the site for just $20 instead of $200.
